Crow Whispers

 2004-06,   90 x 90 cms NFS

Another image that is inspired from that epic Andrei Rubelov, where the medieval Russian muralist wears a crow on his shoulder; man and bird seemingly in conference. Whatever, in terms of Xavier, my idea was to have he and Noelly in 'silent' conversation. Culturally speaking, crows are the harbingers of ill news and often death, in Central Australia, as indeed in many other parts of the world. As carnivores, hovering above carcasses or working at the bone, it is easy to conjecture how this came to be. Whispering. It's an art form commonly used in camp where so much communication is subject to group scrutiny.
