House on the Hill

2005-06, 121 x 204 cms NFS

I wanted to celebrate the site of this house, exposed on a fairly open hill with a vista of the plains behind Emily gap lapping on all sides. After some unusually heavy early winter rain there had been this long dry. The brittle ground was laden with burrs and the heavy headed grasses were wilting. I propped Michael Stewart with my youngest daughter Anjou on his lap, and Gerald Rice with his dog. I'd wanted to make an image of Michael that made evident his blindness, regarding the enhanced tactility of those late Rembrandts as a template, but couldn't arrive at a conclusive parallel.
