Johnsons at Whitegate

1987, 109 x 218 cms NFS

Johnsons at Whitegate is one of the early attempts to step up the narrative direction of the work.. Johnsons and Neals were the occupying families in the 80s when i encountered Whitegate. The painting underwent several alterations, including a partition between the male and female participants which was finally abandoned. And the dog was altered to facilitate the transition between those two elements. Noelly Johnson, at left, has a neckerchief catching the breeze, a touch which I've always loved. These mid 80s works indicate the living quarters/humpies that people were living in at the time.
