The Visitation of Madonna del Parto,
2010 108 x 76 cms NFS
A piece, literally a fragment, of Piero della Francesca's 1460 masterpiece, miraculously transported to Central Australia? As one of the few paintings of a pregnant Madonna, this painting had a significant devotional and ritualistic function for local women, in that touching her pregnant belly would assist would be mothers to have pain after conception alleviated and to have a painless childbirth. I toyed with this after requests from various young mums in camp to have a painting of themselves and their babies with madonna images. Again, Tarkovsky was an inspiration, as it was via his, Nostalgia, that the role of the del Parto suggested itself.
