This Is Not A Bull

2003,  130 x 178 cms NFS

The idea for This Is Not a Bull came from a Mark Tansey reproduction, The Innocent Eye Test, 1981 which, in turn commented on Paulus Potter’s, The Young Bull, of 1647. The reference borrows both Tansey and Plato’s idea of testing the reality of redescribed images that painters conjure. Here though, is an Arrernte twist, with Patrick and Bobby Hayes, with young Gaston before a painting of a bull in a gallery. Either side of this realist image that puzzles the cowboys, are other paintings by Aboriginal artists, other means of visual vocabulary; Gordon Bennett’s Inland Sea and a desert dot painting.
